We couldn't be more excited to announce the launch of SoundOf, our brand new mix series!

SoundOf will focus on the DJs and producers who are making waves in the dance music underground. Each edition will feature an exclusive mix and interview with an artist who has been handpicked by the team at Ministry Magazine.

We've asked Parisian deep house DJ/producer Shiba San to kick things off. Shiba has been causing a stir recently after his track "Okay" became the center piece of the DirtyBird BBQ compilation. Shiba talked to us about music, Paris and BBQs before recording an exclusive hour long mix of deep house and fat basslines.

MoS: First of all thanks for doing the first mix in our new Spotlight mix series! What did you go for in the mix? Is this a representation of what you play out now or more what you listen to at home?

Shiba San: It’s music I like, it’s what I listen to at home and that I'll play on a radio show or podcast, but in the club I play music with more energy.

<p ">For those who may be new to your music, how would you describe your sound?

It’s very hard to describe my own sound, I do what I feel, it’s sometimes a mix between house music & hip hop, sometimes just house music, I find inspiration in deep house also, but I can say that I try to have a fat bass line every time!

How did you first get in to music, when did you know you wanted to be DJ?

<p">When I was Fifteen, I started scratching. I played piano before, and I knew very quickly that it would be important for me to make my own music and play it in clubs.

What have you got coming up on the horizon?

<p">A lot of very famous labels that i like have been contacting me, so I’m working on new tracks as a follow up to "Okay". I have around ten tracks finished and I will work with Dirtybird again for sure. I just finished a remix for Ministry Of Sound of an MK track.

<p">What can the Ministry of crowd expect from your set at DJ Mag sessions?

I will play a lot of unreleased tracks, new remixes & new edits that I did for my own use. I never know exactly what I will play, but fat bassline for sure. I’m very excited to play at Ministry of Sound for DJ Mag

What do you think of the state of dance music at the minute?

Wow, I think that there are a lot of producers who went for the same sound / very hard sound. I feel this is changing already that's why deep house is growing and going to be so huge.

You’re from Paris, which during 2007 was the home of the dance /rock crossover sound associated with Ed Banger, what is the scene like there now, seven years on?

Ed banger is a very special label, no other label in France has the same vibe as they have. They always have new sounds & incredible new fresh artists. It’s the only label in France doing what they do the way they do. I have a lot of respect for that. But I think that a big house & g-house French scene is coming, like Amine Edge & Dance, who are very successful.

Your track "Okay" was the stand out track from the Dirtybird BBQ compilation, what’s your favourite BBQ food and do you have any BBQing tips?

Thanks a lot! It’s incredible, the compilation is so good, I’m a big fan of Justin Martin and Catz & Dogz. For a good BBQ I think that the secret is a big fire with big flames, and Twenty minutes to prepare a fat bassline, served well done.
