This week on SoundOf we have a deep disco mix from "Spooky" producer Quinten 909.

 

 

We've been massive fans of Quinten 909's remix of the Dusty Springfield classic, "Spooky" in the office for years now. We included it in out Ministry Radio Halloween mix last year and have used it to soundtrack a particularly cool scene in our upcoming Miami film. So when we heard that the "Spooky" bootleg got an official release last week, we knew it was high-time we got Quinten in for an exclusive Spotlight mix.

 

First of all thanks for doing an exclusive mix for us, what did you go for in the mix? Is this a representation of what you play out now or more what you listen to at home?

Yoyo! Thanks for having me. I think it’s a good representation of what I like to play out when DJ’ing. Some old tunes, some new, some of my own. Tracks with a good groove that makes you nod your head and stomp your feet and put a smile on your face.

 

For those who may be new to your music, how would you describe your sound?

I would describe it as deep disco house, with a bit of a gangster lean every now and then. I don’t really want to stick to one sub-genre, but I always make sure it has some emotion in it and a funky-ass-bassline.

 

How did you first get into music, when did you know you wanted to be a DJ?

I actually never really wanted to be a DJ. When I started out that wasn’t really a big thing yet like it is today. I just made dope tunes so clubs started booking me. But as soon as I played my first shows I was sold. Best thing in the world for me is when I play a track I've made myself and the crowd loves it. Especially when it’s a track I just made in the studio that afternoon and no one has even heard yet.

 

What have you got coming up on the horizon?

There’s a new EP coming out in a few weeks on a small, but dedicated, label from London called East Project. They're really cool guys, so I’m happy to be a part of it. I've also got another track coming out this summer on Sharam Jey’s label Bunny Tiger and quite a couple of remixes in the works. Should be a good summer for music!

 

You’ve just released your remix of Dusty Springfield’s classic, “Spooky”, this is an office favourite of ours and I believe we inadvertently helped with its release, can you tell us the story behind this?

That’s cool to hear man! Thanks for that. Well I uploaded it to my Soundcloud page about three years ago. After it reached 100.000 plays and you guys put it in your Halloween Radio Mix I thought it was time for a leap of faith. I got in touch with the guys from Universal, who own the rights for Dusty Springfield, and told them about my remix. I was a bit afraid they were gonna murder me for it, but they loved it and gave me the rights to officially release it! It’s been out for three weeks now and doing really well!

 

Do you have any other big remixes in the pipeline?

I have a remix in the works for Andrey Exx. He made a great cover of another classic tune. This one is gonna melt faces around the globe. Just wait and see!

 

What do you think of the state of dance music at the minute?

That’s an interesting question. I think there’s too much talk about music these days. Everyone’s hating on all these big EDM DJ’s, but I don’t really see the point. It’s not for me, but if EDM or Techno is your thing just go for it. And if you don’t like it, don’t go and don’t listen to it. It's as easy as that!

 

Who are the most exciting underground artists that our readers might not have heard of, but who you think will be big names to come?

Well, I’ve been supporting Purple Disco Machine for a long time. It’s awesome to see how he’s blown up over the last year! As for the new generations, keep an eye on FREY. I think he’ll go places in the next year or so. Also my man Mason will be making his return to the big league, I’m pretty sure of that.

 

Who are your biggest influences?

I try not to watch other producers too much, but lately guys like Kolombo, Sharam Jey, Claptone and Purple Disco Machine are definitely an influence on my sound. I love how they bring back those laidback deep disco grooves to the dancefloor.

 

What do you like to do on your day off, what’s a typical Sunday like for you?

When the weekend is over I like to shut down from music completely. Just kick it with my girl, zone out and watch Game of Thrones. Nothing special there really.

 

How do you prepare for a gig?

I always look up the DJ’s that play before and after me. Try to prepare on how to take over from them, do my magic in between and work my way to the other guys sound. Some DJ’s forget that it’s not about you. It’s about the crowd and people having the night of their live. They paid money to come, so you better not let them down.

 

Who are your dream collaborators, past or present?

That’s easy. Nile Rodgers! He made the best music that’s ever written so I’d love to pick his brain.

I run my own party in Amsterdam called BLOCKPARTY with a crazy designer called Aintsane. With this event we add another flavour to the electronic music spectrum of the city. So If you’re ever in town “holler at ya boy”!
