Born in the South of France and now based in London, the fabulously named Laurent St Quentin will release his first EP as K-LAGANE this year. First of all thanks for doing an exclusive mix for us, what did you go for in the mix? Is this a representation of what you play out now or more what you listen to at home?

K-LAGANE: It’s representative of what I play at the present but also part of what I listen to at home.

 

For those who may be new to your music, how would you describe your sound?

It’s house music mixed with several influences, such as techno and bass music.

 

How did you first get into music, when did you know you wanted to be a DJ?

When I got into high school, I was hanging out with a guy who made me discover electronic music, then I started searching for music and different styles of electronic music, and we started mixing with this guy for friend’s parties.

 

What have you got coming up on the horizon?

My first EP is coming soon and also a new remix.

 

What can the Ministry of Sound crowd expect from your set at CUFF on Saturday 21st ?

Something like the mix I did for Ministry of Sound but including several new promo tracks of mine!

 

We’re big fans of your Sunday radio show on Rinse FM, how did you get involved with Rinse?

The guys who are managing Rinse FM France are my friends, and I’ve been invited to perform for Sound Pellegrino and CUFF shows for Rinse.

 

What do you think of the state of dance music at the minute?

I think there is as much good stuff as bad stuff going on right now in dance music. I'm hoping good music will take over from bad music in the future.

 

Who are the most exciting underground artists that our readers might not have heard of, but who you think will be names to watch out for?

I can talk to you about STUFF, he is also a CUFF artist, but he produces music that's quite different from what CUFF would release. I think it will give him the opportunity to evolve in his domain and becoming a big name.

 

Who are your biggest influences?

I can’t really talk about biggest influences, I listen to a lot of different artists, and there is a lot of good stuff, it’s difficult to name only few DJs because there are so many I like and listen to! 

 

You’ve just released your first remix for Cat Cat. Who is your dream artist to remix?

As I said before, I like a lot of artists, but I would love to remix DJs like DJ Deeon or older DJs.

 

Where does the name K-LAGANE come from / what does it mean?

It comes from a character from the movie « Le grand détournement », my friends called me like this. It was a private joke and I kept it as my artist name

 

What do you like to do on your day off, what’s a typical Sunday like for you?

Having some chicken brochettes in Brick Lane and coming back home, doing some music and then watching a good movie

 

How do you prepare for a gig?

I create a new folder on my memory stick, mixing new tracks I found on the Internet and my own new tracks, and also old tracks I still want to play. Then I’m ready to party !

 

Who are your dream collaborators, past or present?

I liked working with Sound Pellegrino, today I work more with CUFF, they are two different labels and both of them have brought me good opportunities

We have an expression in France saying : it’s better having him in a photo rather than having him eating dinner with us. Well several people said that to me as I love food!
