If you haven’t got to know Disciples, it’s time for a reassessment

 

Making an impression on the underground house scene is tough. And that is an understatement. As the number of talented individuals is steadily increasing, the chances of making a mark are falling into infinity. Aside from mixing tracks and laying down beats, it takes raw talent and a certain type of resilience to gain any kind of recognition. But Gavin, Duvall and Luke, aka Disciples, have done just that. While gaining support from the likes of Pete Tong and Annie Mac, the South London producers have attracted a devoted group of followers intent on worshiping their unique sound.

 

In 2013, the trio dropped their debut EP, Remedy, on New State Music, and since then they have not looked back. Unlike many debuts, Remedy  is not an emulation attempting to follow in the footsteps of tradition. It captures the trio’s unique sound that sets them apart from the rest. Defining categorisation and generalisation, it sits somewhere inbetween the house, garage and wider electronic scene. It’s a classic summertime jam, and was instantly picked up by DJ Target who introduced it to the nation on his BBC 1XTRA 100% HomeGrown show. Trevor Nelson, Cameo and Toddla T followed suit, and the track was played out across the airwaves.

 

 

But it was later on in 2014 that the group really began making waves after being snapped up by Pete Tong’s FFRR imprint. Their first release for FFRR was “Catwalk”, further demonstrating Disciples' ability to forge a retro-future sound that captures the attention of many. The track itself draws on the stylisation of New York’s voguing scene prevalent in the late 80s and early 90s. Not only did it attract attention from names such as B Traits, Rob Da Bank and Coco Cole, but it inspired remixes from Bot & Astronomar, Plastic Plates and David Herrero. Now it wouldn’t be fair to talk about Disciples without putting in a word about their latest track, “They Don’t Know”, which came out on FFRR back in February. “They Don’t Know” is a true attestation of Disciples' expertise. It’s a deep, soulful offering with infectious synth loops and a visceral bassline. Alongside being named BBC Radio 1’s ‘Track of the Day’ and Pete Tong’s ‘Essential Tune’, it has been remixed by the likes of Sirus Hood, Alexis Raphael and Pete Tong himself.

 

 

Although the trio are still only young, their back catalogue is an abundant treasure-trove of captivating, retro spun tracks that will have you hooked in no time. Aside from making music, the trio have performed esteemed sets everywhere from Iceland to Ibiza, and this summer looks to be no different.
