The nominees list for the annual Brit Awards ceremony is out
The awards are the chance for the artists whose faces you’ve seen on tube posters all year are finally allowed their 45 seconds of fame, before someone like James Corden cuts them off for an ad break.
At least this year’s nominations list has some semblance of breadth to it. Here are the people up for gongs who you’ll be bothered about.
Major Lazer Up for Best International Group
The ‘International Group’ category is designed for an act outside of the UK, but we believe that Major Lazer need to win it because they’ve managed to globe trot through as many countries as the rest of the nominees together. Probably. The first act to play in Cuba since the lifting of its historical embargo, they’ve honoured India in the video for their most popular track to date, as well as managing to make a man out of Justin Bieber. It’s unstoppable behaviour that needs rewarding.
Jamie xx- In Colour for Best Album
GOOD TIMES, GOOD TIMES. Shout out to Jamie xx for receiving a worthy nomination for making an underground album with enough sentimentality to cross over to the outer rings of the realms of pop world. Radio perfect songs combined with true to form under the skin growers, In Colour was a record made by a guy who has ‘musical breakthrough’ down to a T.
Calvin Harris & Disciples - "How Deep Is Your Love" for Best British Single
The ubiquitous "How Deep Is Your Love". How it washed over us like the metaphorical wave of emotion its song title belies. Love it or loathe it, Calvin Harris has once again proven that no matter what the output, he has the ability to produce songs that end up everywhere, from the mid-point of your favourite night out last year to the radio of your mum’s car when she’s doing the school run. A true Great Brit.
Aphex Twin For Best British Solo Male
HAHAHA WTF? No grime artists included whatsoever but Aphex Twin? One of the most elusive and alternatively acclaimed producers of recent years is sitting there in between James Bay and Calvin Harris. It's worth him winning just to see the look of confusion on the faces of approximately 89 percent of audience members.
