Major Lazer have become one of the most powerful performance acts in the world
Their shows are all air cannons and dancers and audience participation, their guest collaborators are fully fledged pop stars. Arianna Grande, Ellie Goulding and Bruno Mars have all leant their lyrics, and with their help Diplo has become a production force to be reckoned with.
Old photos of the dance trio with stadium sized aspirations show a different story. Major Lazer pre-2012 are two unassuming guys in hats, looking away from the camera and draped in the cartoon image of the indomitable gun-armed warrior.
Diplo and Switch in 2010
Though Diplo is as recognisable as ever, his ginger companion is more difficult to place. Switch - or Dave, to his parents - is known primarily for being the original half of Major Lazer.
Exiting the group after its debut album Guns Don't Kill People, Lazers Do positioned them as dance music with its eye on the globe, with Switch going on to focus on pop production.
As Switch makes his comeback this Saturday, we revisit a few of the cuts he's played a dab hand in producing.
Nice one, Dave.
M.I.A - "XR2"
