Hailing from Detroit themselves, Golf Clap are as wise a source as any when it comes to producers from their hometown
The self confessed "after-party enthusiasts" will be bringing a bag full of bangers to The Loft this Saturday, as Doorly and Switch take to The Box for what will be a riotous return for the latter.
Hugh and Bryan were kind enough to tease and please us with this selections of the five Detroit producers who get their engines going the most.
Andres
In our opinion the best house producer in Detroit. He also used to DJ for Slum Village and is arguably the best turntablist in the city. Currently he's been releasing with Moodymann's Mahogani & KDJ labels. His songs have so much feeling and soul in them. Here's one of our favourites of his, which was also named #1 song of 2012 by Resident Advisor.
Omar S
Our other favourite house guy from Detroit. We've played a lot of music from him over the years. He releases on his own FXHE label. Saw him play on the patio at TV Lounge last summer and it was one of our favourite sets all year. Love his use of old drum machines and gear to get that classic deep house sound. This is a song that we've been busting out from time to time since Golf Clap started.
Robert Hood
Although he's relocated from Detroit, there's no way we can't mention Robert Hood on this list. He's responsible for some of the best Detroit techno records ever made. Floorplan is his new project that he's been releasing under and the records are just as legendary. We are also in love with his Boiler Room set from Mutek. This is our favourite of his tunes.
Reference
Some of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, Luke Hess & Brian Kage make up the Detroit duo Reference. Both are accomplished producers and DJs on their own as well. They've released on Carl Craig's Planet E and Poker Flat, and also have performed live on the main stage at Movement Electronic Music Festival. Here's one of their songs from Brian's label, Beretta Music.
Carl Craig
Speaking of Carl Craig, he rounds out the list of our favourite producers from Detroit. He's the founder of the classic techno label Planet E and also tours non stop around the world headlining clubs and festivals and pushing the Detroit techno sound. Here's his insane remix of Green Velvet that we've pulled out a few times in our sets lately, usually when things get weird.
