Following violence and clashes at the Unite The Right protest in Charlottesville last week that lead to the tragic death of Heather Heyer, domain servers, brands and social platforms have stood up to speak out and take action against white supremacy.
Earlier this week, GoDaddy and Google banned neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer from hosting domains on their platforms.
Music streaming service Spotify is the latest company to take action, removing a number of 'hate bands' from their platform.
Sparked by an article posted earlier this week by Digital Music News titled "I Just Found 37 Hate Bands On Spotify”, the service released a statement saying they have removed the groups.
Talking to Billboard, they said that while record labels and aggregators are "at first hand responsible" for delivering the bands to Spotify, "illegal content or material that favors hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like is not tolerated by us".
A spokeswoman continued: “Spotify takes immediate action to remove any such material as soon as it has been brought to our attention. We are glad to have been alerted to this content – and have already removed many of the bands identified today, whilst urgently reviewing the remainder.”
