London Mayors tweet
Sadiq Khan takes to twitter to vent about tory request

Following a letter written by and shared on Twitter by Tory MP Greg Hands, calling for the famous London event to be moved in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster, disgraced Londoners have hit back via Twitter with disgust and disappointment. Hands' letter described the area as a 'major national disaster' and argued it would be inappropriate for a celebration to occur within the vicinity of the fire.

The MP also suggested that the organisation of the carnival be handed over, at least in part, from the original organisers to the Greater London Authority.

But fear not! Our good old London Mayor, Sadiq Khan has rejected Hands' suggestion, responding on twitter 'Notting Hill Carnival is a firm London tradition and incredibly important to the local community. It should not be moved.'

Members of the West London community feel strongly about the event and the deep cultural meaning it has for the west-indian community in London. This is not the first year the grass-roots event has come under scrutiny after previous years have been threatened with the prospect of becoming a ticketed event in order to control crowd numbers.
