In our new series we take a look at the biggest tunes in dance music, the tracks that go off every single time.

 

 

In 1995, house legend Todd Terry created one of the most iconic remixes of all time. Taken from Everything But The Girl's eighth studio album, Amplified Heart, "Missing" was originally not a hit on release.

As an early indicator of their future electronic experimentation, Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt were keen to create a remix version. Speaking at the time to Rolling Stone, Tracey Thorn said of the record, "It was written with that [dancefloor] idea in mind, totally... we put on sort of a laid-back house groove instead. Then when we gave it to Todd, he took it in a really, really strong New York house direction, which had a real simplicity to it, but it was very infectious."

It was indeed infectious and Todd's version stormed the charts around the world, peaking at No.3 in the UK and No.2 in the USA. Writing at the time, music magazine, "What a difference a few months and a remix can make. Miami is where "Missing" has busted big, and where requests tell the story of how broad the appeal of the song really is. Track two, the remix edit, is the one to check out."

The remix far eclipsed the original and became the gold standard in the emerging world of commercial remixes. It set off Todd's career as a storied remixer who has been drafted in by everyone from Duran Duran and The Rolling Stones to Michael Jackson and Björk.

The remix was voted No.21 in Mixmag's 100 Greatest Dance Singles Of All Time and No.8 in MTV's 100 Biggest 90's Dance Anthems Of All Time.
