The Daft Punk subreddit descending into another of its bi-monthly frenzies this week as a mysterious SoundCloud clip was suspected to be a leak from the robots. The clip does indeed sound very Daft Punky, but I for one would argue that a great deal of dance and pop music sounds vaguely Daft Punky in 2018.

There are a few other aspects that have people thinking it could be legit; firstly the username 19972001200420132019 includes the release year for every Daft Punk album, plus hints at a future one in 2019. Secondly, the 17 second run time is the same length as the infamous "Get Lucky" ad which heralded their return in 2013. Thirdly, people are somehow tying it up with ambitious rumours that Daft Punk, Swedish House Mafia and Deadmau5 will perform surprise sets at Ultra's 20th Birthday this weekend. And fourthly, it uses a lot of sonic techniques that are regarded as Daft Punk calling cards, you can read a detailed explanation of that here.

The argument is certainly sound, if somewhat reaching, but I'm 99% sure that this, like every Daft Punk leak is a fake.

Here are some reasons why I think it isn't legit:

  1. It never is
  2. Human After All was released in 2005, not 2004, an error I doubt Daft Punk would make
  3. It's April Fool's Day in ten days
